Clock in at Your Kitchen Table

These are a couple of paragraphs from a book "Free Stuff for Seniors" but I think this would apply to even more. Here they are:

Maybe you need a job, but don't feel much like going back to a frantic workplace environment. If so, Home employment might be the right choice for you. Finding the right situation, however, can be tricky.

There are lots of opportunities for seniors to work out of their homes, but there are also a lot of scams. Some newspaper and magazine ads make very tempting claims, but then demand that you order expensive"training materials" or pay for "start up cost." Be very careful with outfits like these-it's hard to tell the difference between a legitimate company and someone who just wants to take your money.
(Well, no kidding)(my input)
As usual, the best way to be safe is to be informed. Information from the "Home Employment Project' may be able to help you sort through the bogus claims and find legitimate home employment opportunities. For their free newsletter that can start you in the right direction, call 1-800-574-6184. Ask for extension 111.

BABYSTEPS LEAD TO HUGE ACCOMPLISHMENTS.

I've been editing this page and rewriting it for a few months now, trying to find the right words to explain my sitation without sounding like someone that just wants a hand out.  After realizing my life is still is just passing me by with each day ending as depressing as it began for me. Let me quickly tell you a little about myself and some of the accomplishments I've made over the last 4 years.  I'm a single mother of 2 gorgeous girls.  They truely are what has kept me going and given me the strength to wake up each day and take that baby step toward my next goal.  They are ages 3 and 10.  When I became pregnant with my 3 year old, I quickly realized how fast my life had spiraled out of control and that if I didn't move home (parents) to make some major life changes I was going to end up losing my children and possible eventually myself. My Mom and Dad welcomed us with open arms and at first things were great! At least until my addiction to prescription pills got out of hand.  I put them through so much and I suppose I can't blame them for the resentment they still feel toward me even after being sober for 3 years now. Well it will be 3 years in 2 months but you get my point ;)  After I became sober I quickly realized that I had some major underlying problems.   I was trying to self medicate to ease the pain. I was really scarred from a physically abusive relationship with my children's father. I was with him for 7 long and painful years. It finally came to an end when I ended up in the hospital for broken ribs and several life threatening injuries from the beating I recieved while he was drunk on a rampage.  Thank God my parents let us go home. I've been here since and our relationship has gone from tolerating each other to emationally abusive. There have been a few times that it's gotten physical.  The hatred I saw in my fathers eyes before he pushed me down to the ground brought up so many HORRIBLE memories.  I feel stuck and my depression is really taking its toll on me. I do my best to be a good mother and no matter whatI do I'm always wrong in parents eyes.  They degrade me in front of my girls and tell them how worthless I was and that they shouldn't listen to someone that is a "druggy". I could go on but you get the point. I need out and it feels hopeless. I have no car, no job because I live in the country and without a car I can't get to school or find a career. I've quickly gone from being in a physically abusive relationship but working 3 jobs and feeling like a decent human being to what my parents refer to as their druggy daughter they can't get rid of. My mother has always resented me from the time I was a child and honestly never liked me. I'm finding it so hard to be honest here because I really do love my parents and the thought of leaving here scares me. I just feel like a child and I'm a very mature, independent (believe it or not ;) woman who is stuck in a horribly scary situation with no hope to get out. I'm seeking anyone that can guide me to any kind of help or advice on how to start over with nothing and no help. I'm ready emotionally, and being sober 3 years even through this I know I won't have an issue continuing it. I am no longer a smoker and actually have been a very clean and organized person for over a year now. (If you knew me before, I was just depressed and it showed all around me :( I got my GED a month after getting sober and was so excited to start college but without a car I was just out of luck.  I know I'm rambling but you get my point :)

If I found someone who could take me under their wing I know I would be a successful single mother working as many hours as it takes to give my girls the life I know they deserve.  I know my parents will be there for them and unfortunately they can't forgive my past and move forward. It's just to hard for them and honestly with what I put them through I don't blame them. I just wish I could do something to show them I'm a better person with values and morals now. I miss the feeling of having two parents who love me. I feel like I have no one.  Honestly I don't have anyone but my girls and each day that passes I my parents try to pull them farther and farther from me emotionally.

I just feel like I have so much to offer and no one to share it with. I like to think I'm pretty smart, very creative and LOVE to draw, graphic design and anything with computers are what I do when I'm shut in my room escaping reality. It's time I reach out. I know there has to be someone or something out there willing to give me a hand up but not a hand out. I'm ready and I believe my actions the last few years show that I'm not just talking the talk but ready to walk the walk.

I am actually suffering form a broken leg right from taking a fall while tripping over a toy while doing housework.  Being the stubborn woman I am and not to mention being that girl that always cried wolf in my past I didn't make it to the hospital for 3 days. I was hopping and crawling around like a nut until my father finally insisted I go to the ER. I happily obliged and to my surprise, I was hopping out with a cast on and scheduled to see an ortho surgeon 2 days later.  He quickly scheduled me for surgery the next morning at 12 pm (sidenote: 12 pm?? what happened to morning surgery?? I was sooooo hungry after fasting since midnight!! :D) It happend so fast that I almost didn't have time to realize how much this was going to change my life.  I went into surgery and had 2 plates and several screws put in 3 weeks before Christmas. It was so emotionally painful on top of physically painful for me after surgery. I have been on 800 mg Ibuprofin ever since and I truely believe God must have been giving me the strength to fight my pain without even the thought of taking something that would put my sobriety in jeapardy. It's now January 4th, 2010 and while I'm hopping on crutches in my hot pink cast, I'm ALIVE! I know there is something out there God has put me here to do and I intend on breaking through all my roadblocks until I find it. This broken leg has actually been a blessing in disguise because it snapped me back into reality. I had sunk into such a depression after I realized that my actions ultimately lost me two of the people I was trying so hard to make proud of me. It's so confusing because I feel like I've come so far and to stop now would be a shame. My parents beg to differ. They would say that I'm worse now than I have ever been. When I cry, which is a lot lately my mother tells me that I chose to be a single mother and put myself in this situation so stop martyring and start changing and do things the right way!  I just wish I knew what the right way is. I point out all of my accomplishments and even remind them that I have CHANGED through actions like going above and beyond with housework (even with my cast on, Ive learned to vaccum, and kept the entire house with the exception of their room (which they keep locked at all times STILL) spotless. My mom just insists that I owe her so much more and that a clean house or a mopped floor isn't going to make up for the years of misery I've put her through.

Just in case you have skipped my long drawn out story to this  part I'd like to quickly list my accomplishments the last few years. I really cant believe how much I have accomplished without the support of family or friends. I can honestly say I've done it alone. I successfully completed GED classes & passed my test with flying colors! YAY!, I've been able to stay drama free (which was a huge issue of mine when I was taking pills) and through the grace of God I've been sober for 3 years (well technically it's 3 years in 2 months but who's counting other than ME!). I am the room mother for my daughters class and PTO Mom, I also coach cheerleading and softball.  My grandmother took a fall and broke her hip 2 years ago. This blessing in disguise gave me a feeling of accomplishment and gave me the opporunity to be there for her.  I basicially took care of her day and night with no help from the other family. It's amazing how people distance themselves in crisis.  I've gone from completely disorganized to clean and clutter free.  Ive quit smoking thanks to my handy little e-cigarette.  If you dont know what that is please ask me. I have helped my grandmother, 3 uncles and brother all quit smoking with this genius invention.  I'm not lying. Its that amazing and I cant believe its not more popular. I also was able to get my drivers license back after 5 years. I spent numerous hours in class again and saved every penny to afford the insurance. It was such a wonderful feeling even if I didnt have a car. They don't make it easy to get them back thats for sure. I could write all my little baby steps Ive taken but I think you get the point with my bigger accomplishments. My biggest one though has definately been finding God.  Hes given me the power and strength to fight for the my children and I deserve.  I have the motivation I once lacked again!  Thank you for reading my story.

10 Tips on Avoiding Work at Home Scams

10 Tips on Avoiding Work At Home and
Home Based Business Scams

1. Never, NEVER pay for the chance to work!

This is the cardinal rule. You should treat working at home just like you would treat working for an employer at their place of business.

If you were going for a job interview in the 'real world,' how would you react if the interviewer asked you to pay $50 or $100 to land the job, for starter materials, or for a 'good faith' payment to make sure you were serious about the business?

You'd think it was absurd. No legitimate company charges employees a fee for a job.

Whenever you're asked to pay for the chance at a job, or information about work-from-home jobs, you know it's a scam.

Home-based businesses, on the other hand, may require start-up costs to cover investments, materials, franchises, or other items. As we state in the next step, check things out before you pay anything.

2. Check out the business before you pay anything.

Have you heard of the business that's soliciting your money?

If not, check them out carefully. Make sure they have a physical address and a phone number. Call to see if it's a real phone number. Do a search on http://www.Google.com to see if you can find any positive or negative comments. Check references carefully.

Some warning signs of scammer companies:

- They use free Web hosting services (such as Tripod or Geocities).

- They use free Web email services (such as Yahoo! Mail or Hotmail).

- They use Post Office boxes for mailings and don't disclose their real addresses.

- They won't give you a telephone number where you can contact them.

3. Use your credit card to make purchases.

This sounds counter-intuitive, but if you are going to buy a starter kit or make some investment relating to a home-based business, purchase using your credit card.

That way, if you don't receive the items, or if things go wrong, you can dispute the charges with your credit card company. If you're unsure how to do this, speak to your credit card company *before* you make the purchase.

4. Research the market for the proposed business/work.

Every scammer will promise unlimited wealth and easy work. With a little virtual footwork, you can see whether you can make money doing this kind of business or work.

If you're thinking of starting a medical billing practice, for example, call a few doctors and hospitals in your city or town and ask if there would be a market for your services. As we mentioned in the last issue, you may be surprised to discover just how limited the market really is.

5. Beware of vagueness and incredible claims.

Companies that don't state their names, costs, or other important information in their ads usually have a good reason to do so -- they're scammers. As well, be wary of claims that you can"make up to $1,000 a week" doing just a few hours' worth of unskilled work.

Don't be blinded by greed.

6. Put yourself in the employer's/client's shoes.

If you were an honest employer (or client, if you're looking to work from home), think about whether you would make the same kind of offer you're being pitched.

For example, you've read an ad where you can earn $1-2 per piece stuffing envelopes. But companies nowadays have access to sophisticated mailing equipment that can stuff thousands of envelopes an hour -- why would they pay you so much more?

7. Consider starting your own home-based business.

If you're really interested in working for yourself, starting your own home-based business can be a great idea. It also involves a lot of work, and much of the time, some investment.

This is not a decision to make lightly, nor should you start a business just because you can't find a job.

Having said that, starting your own business -- if you're willing to do your homework and do what's necessary to make it a success -- may well become one of the best decisions you ever made.

There are lots of great resources on starting a legitimate home business. (But remember, you won't receive them via spam.)

8. Don't come across as desperate.

You may be in dire straits financially, but it's worth your while to act calmly and professionally -- just like you would in a real-world job search.

Posting messages on forums saying that you are in financial trouble, or desperate to find work from home is a bad idea. Desperation is like blood to sharks -- it'll bring all of the scammers out of the woodwork, and you'll be inundated with phony offers.

9. Be patient.

If you're looking to start a home-based business, or looking for telecommuting work you can do at home, you may have a considerable search ahead of you. There are a *lot* of people in the same boat, many of whom are falling prey to scams every day.

Don't let scammers use high-pressure tactics to sucker you in. If you're given a time-limited offer, there's usually a reason why -- scammers know that pressure brings in people!

Even if you're in dire straits, it pays to be patient... so that you don't lose money to schemes that never materialize.

10. And most important, NEVER reply to spam.

Fraudulent offers for home-based businesses or work-at-home opportunities almost always arrive as spam. The better it sounds, the less likely that it's legitimate.

Scammers aren't planning to deliver anyway, so what does it matter to them what they promise? Delete and move on.

As we say -- if it's spam, it's a scam!

This is a legitimate work at home job and no I don’t get a kickback from applicants. This job was a lifesaver when work slowed down for me a couple of years ago. You do need a broadband connection and a headset phone. You get to choose your own hours in 30 min. increments 24/7. They do have high expectations and monitor your work. So if you’re not doing your job or doing it incorrectly they will give you several chances to straighten up before they let you go. Clicky!

F.Y.I. ~ Scams to Look out For! Help on your Search!

This was posted by a online friend Jennifer at momscafe, she has some of the best articles and help for anyone wanting to work from home. To read more from Jennifer I would suggest you join momcafe, there are a lot of different topic from work at home, raising kids with disbilities. So here is a message from Jennifer:

Please be very Careful on your search for Work at Home... If you have any questions, ask here, I have years of experience and pretty much have tried everything. I am now very SUCCESSFUL with Ameriplan®, but I lost alot of money during my search before Ameriplan®!!! Here are some Information on a Typical WAH SCAM...

Assembly Work at Home
: Typical Ad -- "Assembly work at home! Easy money assembling craft items. No experience necessary." This scheme requires you to invest hundreds of dollars in instructions and materials and many hours of your time to produce items such as baby booties, toy clowns, and plastic signs for a company that has promised to buy them. Once you have purchased the supplies and have done the work, the company often decides not to pay you because your work does not meet certain "standards." You are then left with merchandise that is difficult or impossible to sell.

Envelope Stuffing: Typical Ad -- "$350 Weekly Guaran- teed! Work two hours daily at home stuffing envelopes." When answering such ads, you may not receive the expected envelopes for stuffing, but instead get promotional material asking for cash just for details on money-,making plans. The details usually turn out to be instructions on how to go into the business of placing the same kind of ad the advertiser ran in the first place. Pursuing the envelope ad plan may require spending several hundred dollars more for advertising, postage, envelopes, and printing. This system feeds on continuous recruitment of people to offer the same plan. There are several variations on this type of scheme, all of which require the customer to spend money on advertising and materials. According to the U.S. Postal Inspection Service, "In practically all businesses, envelope stuffing has become a highly mechanized operation using sophisticated mass mailing techniques and equipment which eliminates any profit potential for an individual doing this type of work-at-home. The Inspection Service knows of no work-at-home promotion that ever produces income as alleged."

Chain letter: Typical Ad -- "Make copies of this letter and send them to people whose names we will provide. All you have to do is send us ten dollars for our mailing list and labels. Look at the chart below and see how you will automatically receive thousands in cash return!!!" The only people who benefit from chain letters are the mysterious few at the top of the chain who constantly change names, addresses, and post office boxes. They may attempt to intimidate you by threatening bad luck, or try to impress you by describing themselves as successful professionals who know all about non-existent sections of alleged legal codes.

Home Typist (also order taker/application taker): There are lots of home typist positions that are perfectly legitimate, but these never ask you for a fee and they are also rarely advertised online. Don't get suckered by ads that promise home typing work that require a fee. They are all variations on the email processing scam.

Appointment setter: Similar to the scam above.  You are cold calling and telemarketing to set up appointments for reps to make home visits.  You get paid if and only if the appointment you set up "qualifies".  Guess what??? They usually don't "qualify".

Lists of companies that hire home workers: Many people get scammed into buying lists that promise hundreds of “sure bet” companies that are just waiting to hire you to work from home. The simple reality is that these lists are often just compiled from the telephone book and many of the companies on them, if the companies exist at all, don't know they're on such a list. And, the real kicker: Most of these companies don't even hire home-based workers. There are legitimate lists online, but they are totally free for you to review.

Online Business: Typical Ad -- "Turn your Home Computer into a Cash Machine! Get computer diskette FREE! Huge Selection of Jobs! No experience needed! Start earning money in days! Many companies want to expand, but don’t want to pay for office space. You save them money by working in the comfort of your home." This is typical of advertisements showing up uninvited in your e-mail—an old scheme advertised in a new way. You pay for a useless guide to work-at-home jobs—a mixture of computer-related work such as word processing or data entry and the same old envelope-stuffing and home crafts scams. The computer disk is as worthless as the guidebook. It may only list free government web sites and/or business opportunities which require more money.

Processing Medical Insurance Claims: Typical Ad -- "You can earn from $800 to $1000 weekly processing insurance claims on your home computer for health care professionals such as doctors, dentists chiropractors, and podiatrists. Over 80% of providers need your services. Learn how in one day!"

Generally, the promoter of this scheme attracts you by advertising on cable television and, perhaps, by inviting you to a business opportunity trade show at a hotel or convention center. You may be:

Urged to buy software programs and even computers at exorbitant prices; a program selling at a software store for $69 might cost you several thousands of dollars. Told that your work will be coordinated with insurance companies by a central computer. Required to pay for expensive training sessions available at a "current special rate" that will be higher in the future, and Pressured to make a decision immediately. Most likely, the expensive training sessions are superficial, and the market for your services is very small or nonexistent. The promoter may delay the processing of your job, citing a backlog or mistakes in your work. There may also be no central computer as advertised. You may be left with no way to deliver what you have promised to your clients or customers—if you found any—and with no way to earn any money on you own.

$6 Chain letter. If you’ve ever seen the $6 Chain Letter in your Inbox, you’ve experienced a pyramid scheme up close and personal. For only $6, you can make thousands or so promises the letter. A simple rule of thumb: Avoid all chain letters, especially when money is being requested. This is one letter you’ll want to avoid like the plague because not only is it totally illegal and it doesn't work

Reading books for pay: A variation on the job’s list is the Make Money Reading Books” list. This list names publishers who pay to have individuals review their manuscripts. As with the lists in #5, you can find this information for free on the Web yourself. And, while it is true that some publishing companies pay people to review manuscripts, they will advertise these positions carefully. They are not typically happy about receiving unsolicited resumes.

Email processors: Email processing is the e-version of envelope stuffing. Typically, you pay person 1 a fee of between $5-30 and then person 1 sends you your 'information kit'. This typically tells you how to take the exact same ad you replied to and send it out by email or on newsletters to convince others to send you the same fee you sent Person 1.
